Just a basic tutorial I made on horse hooves with the knowledge that I have. You should use more then just this. If you are wanting to look for something more advanced/technical, go to google/get some books! I personally believe an artist should always reference photos, videos, or real horses if you are wanting to draw them. Study their anatomy! Practice! Practice Practice!
Try not to study other people's artwork or styles. I personally do not like tuts that try to show budding artist how to draw an animal's anatomy when it is riddled with their style. Why? Because the will most likely end up copying your style and mistakes. I tried not to stylize my hooves here but just make them simple drawings. This is why I added the hoof images!
The more you do this the more you understand how the horse's anatomy works. Simply tracing(although can help a little) is not simply enough in my opinion. You need to understand anatomy in order for it to make sense to you, not just the lines. If you don't understand then you will forever be doing guess work! If you are serious on learning their anatomy I suggest doing more research.
If you struggle on hooves, free-hand as much as possible. It's OKAY if they look sucky, they will get better. Hooves are pretty hard to nail down. Don't cheat yourself.
Make that brain learn! This is how I learned.
Here are some GREAT books that will help you!!Some are also cheap to get. I have these in my personal collection. They do help. There are many more books like this on the market!www.amazon.com/Horse-Conformat…www.amazon.com/Animal-Anatomy-…www.amazon.com/Photographic-Gu…www.amazon.com/Atlas-Animal-An…www.amazon.com/Getting-Touch-U…
(I like this book because it shows drawings of various horses individual appearances, great if you are wanting to learn how to develop your characters looks)
wikipedia for the human hand and some information on horse hooves.
Hope this helps somewhat.
